The Palette That Started It All | Urban Decay Naked

Follow

Hello Everyone,

I hope you're all well and have had a great summer, I can't believe Autumn will be upon us soon, especially since we haven't really had a summer here at all, it's been rain, rain, rain here.

With the poor weather and the inability to go outside, I've spent a large amount of time sorting through my belongings lately, donating things to charity, binning things, ebaying other things and rediscovering old favourites and one item that got me thinking was my trusty old Urban Decay Naked Palette

The Urban Decay Naked palette is more than just another palette in my collection to me, it is the palette, the one that started it all and became an accidental symbol.

I had always looked at the makeup stands in the lovely shops that I couldn't afford, I loved everything about these stands, the perfectly made up sales assistants, the beautifully packaged products, the huge range of shades and the boxes of things that I wasn't quite sure what they actually were but I wanted them.
At the time I was using an old white eye shadow that I had been given free with a magazine, I didn't own a blusher and my mascara did nothing for me, these makeup halls were filled with promise, of the woman I wanted to one day be and at the center of it all was the Naked palette. I had watched a girl online using this palette in a tutorial (this was waaaaayyyy before YouTube is what it is now) and my mind was made up, I would own this palette.

I got myself a nice little job and with the first pay day I treated myself to the Naked experience, and it didn't let me down. Naked 1 (which, at the time was the only naked palette) was everything I had hoped it would be, highly pigmented, wearable, beautiful and so very very smooth. Even a novice (like I was at the time) could create something beautiful using this palette. My favourite shades were Sin and Naked, and I would pair them together most days for work.
The palette above isn't instagram ready, it's very used, has traveled the world with me and has been with me through some of the hardest and best times.

It is currently well out of date, but I just can't part with it, I know it is a bit silly to be sentimental over makeup, but this isn't just makeup to me, this little box of nude shades is a symbol to me, the girl then wanting to be the woman I've become now, the gateway to makeup love and the ability to exercise my own creativity in thinking up looks that match my mood.

The reminder that once I was stood there on the outside looking into a world I couldn't understand but years later I was stood with an overnight bag stuffed full of my favourite products doing my best friend's makeup for her wedding day along with the other bridesmaids (and yes, my bag contained in-date Urban Decay products!). Sometimes things can seem unattainable, impossible at times but if you work at them, they can stop being dreams and become a reality.

My collection of pretty things and special makeup may be a lot bigger these days, but I'll never forget the day I grasped that brand new Naked palette in my hands and started on the next stage of my life journey.

Do you have a special item you just can't part with?

  1. I'm not really a makeup person but I do understand that sentimentality! I still keep my lipstick I wore on my wedding day - it's years out of date now but I just can't part with it! I have the same problem with clothes - too many good memories associated with them, it's hard to let them go!

Hope you had a great weekend :)

  2. I can totally relate with you! Naked will always be the 'primary' palette for me. It is a classic must-have! I am very selective on what makeup to buy, but Naked 1 & 2 will always be the most fundamental one-stop palette for me. ♥

  4. I love the 'Naked' palette too - the shades are all so wearable! I'm not very sentimental about make-up, but I do keep some clothes that are associated with happy memories (even though I know I will never wear them again!)

  9. This is so funny, I have a post scheduled for tomorrow about using up my existing makeup but I chose the Naked palette for my photo for all the same reasons. It's such an iconic one and it's my oldest palette (and is absolutely filthy / battered). For me, the first 'proper' makeup I bought was from MAC. Retrospect eyeshadow and I used to wear it on it's own haha. I just loved it and it started a decade long obsession.

  10. I have seen this Urban Decay Naked palette EVERYWHERE! It's crazy that I still haven't booted myself out the door to get it...but then again, I'm not exactly make-up inclined (I love the stuff...I just have no clue what I'm doing with it).

    Very informative post!

  12. OMG, this same thing basically happened with me. I had makeup, but barely used it & this palette made me delve into the YouTube beauty guru world. It’s such an amazing palette. This & Naked2 are pretty much the only eyeshadows I use. You can just make up so many looks with them! Thanks for sharing your story!

  15. I always think the original was the best still, every colour you need for day or night and one that I would always go back to.

  16. I can't believe I still don't own one of these.

I do have a very well used pot of a REALLY old mac shade (the info on the bottom long worn off so I don't even know the shade name). That pot for me was where it all started and I've never looked back. I might not be as loyal to mac as I once was but I still love it!

  17. I see so much about these pallets and they do look amazing but I've never bought one tbh I'm not the best when it comes to eye shadow I usually use my seventeen shimmer bronzer as it haha, I can't part with my Nars radiant creamy concealer x

  18. Such a great reminder of where you've been and how far you've come, even if it's as simple as a makeup palette as an example. And I love Urban Decay eyeshadows - super pigmented!

  20. I'm the same, this palette started me on a palette spree too. Strangely though at first I didn't like it...probably because it was so over-hyped. Now I love it and always go back to it. Mine is very out of date too! x

  21. I love this post Rosy! So cool that the Naked palette is what made your interest in makeup really take off. I actually feel really akin to your story because I have some 5-6 year old Kat Von D palettes I just can't get rid of, they both have a few colors I never touch but it's just a reminder of how far we've all come in our beauty regimens and personal growth. Thanks for sharing girl, so beautiful!

  23. Loved hearing your story! That palette was my first eye shadow palette. I love it. I just got the heat one and it is so pretty. I cleaned out my closet (donated, put things up for sale and threw away) a couple of months ago. It's a great feeling!

  25. I actually asked Santa for my Urban Decay Naked 1 palette. I still have it, use it, and a few shades are already almost finished. This was a perfect excuse to but another palette, this time number 3, which... I did not use yet because I just love how clean it looks! Iga x www.igaberry.com

  39. I am totally getting a NAKED palette next time I am out for beauty buys! I want to try it for such a long time, and will definitely let you know when I try it. My special piece that I cannot let go is my Benefit primer lately. Even when I am not going to wear makeup (especially during summer), a thin layer of this product is what you need for perfectly smooth skin! Have you tried it? For me it's the king of primers :)

  40. Such a lovely post. It's wonderful to hear about people's makeup journeys. Mine was similar to yours in some ways. My first palette was the Urban Decay 15th Anniversary palette and, though the colours are a lot brighter and bolder than I often reach for, I loved the quality. It was the beginning of a whole new world for me. Xx

  42. Urban Decay are one of my favourite brands and love their palette releases and this one the Naked original is rather gorgeous! I love Half Baked, I have the single of it also so it's portable.

Really impressed with the brand as a whole and they put so much TLC into their packaging.

Great post and I can't believe it's Autumn!

Wishing you a wonderful rest of the month ahead :)
